Tropical infectious diseases affect the brain. Viruses, bacteria, protozoa and helminths can enter the brain directly impact multiple functions, including cognition and emotional regulation. Some of the neglected tropical diseases result in deformity and disablement, leading to stigmatisation by the community, which contributes in the worsening of the mental health of the sufferer. This can contribute to the development of anxiety, depression and occasionally even suicide. This lecture will situate infectious diseases within the context of brain health and will review the biological mechanisms of these interactions.
