Supporting AFL Cape York House Cultural Group

The Sustainable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Enterprise (SATSIE) program proudly supported the AFL Cape York House Dance Group in participating in DanceRites, Australia's premier Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dance competition. Held at the iconic Sydney Opera House Forecourt from October 18–21, the event brought together groups from across the nation to share traditional culture and compete in front of over 8,000 spectators, including locals and tourists.

The AFL Cape York House Dance Group focuses on creating opportunities for Indigenous youth to showcase their cultural heritage while engaging in educational experiences. Their mission is to promote cultural preservation, education, empowerment, and community engagement through the performing arts. Cultural Support Officer Bernard Singleton expressed the significance of this opportunity:
"We believe that supporting endeavors such as these demonstrates a strong commitment to Indigenous youth empowerment, cultural preservation, and community engagement. Your support makes a significant impact on the lives of Indigenous youth, helping them embrace their heritage, gain educational opportunities, and inspire future generations."

Last year, the AFL Cape York House Aboriginal Group achieved runner-up status in the competition. This year, both the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups were honored as finalists, reflecting their dedication to excellence and cultural pride.

In addition to DanceRites, following an introduction by the SATSIE program earlier in the year, the group was invited to attend a unique knowledge and cultural exchange organized by the U.S. Consul with Internationally recognized Native American dance group Native Pride Productions. The two groups came together to share stories and traditional and cultural exchange. Many of AFL Cape York House performers felt this was a highlight of the trip and felt honoured to be able to have the opportunity to participate in the cultural exchange.

SATSIE team members Dr Jim Turnour and Jen McHugh were honored to attend the AFL Cape York awards night, held November 11 to celebrate some of the remarkable achievements of members of the dance group as well as all students at both the AFL Cape York House for boys and girls.
