    Emerging Designers Panel

What contribution do locally based designers make to the future of the development of Cairns? Is regionalism a lost cause?

Designed in Cairns is an initiative through the Australian Institute of Architects FNQ Region and is held in conjunction with The Cairns Institute, JCU. It provides continuing professional development activities for architects and designers generally in the regions and interesting opportunities for discussions and information for anyone interested in regional design.
The series is based on a theme around Designed in Cairns.

    The Panel

This instalment of Designed in Cairns includes a panel of emerging leaders in the local development community and is aimed at evoking a dialogue between industry members under 35 in our region. The panel will include young thinkers within the engineering, architectural, and planning spaces—all considering the same question: What contribution do locally based designers make to the future of the development of Cairns? Is regionalism a lost cause?

    Hansley

Hansley Gumbaketi is a recent graduate of the JCU Urban and Regional Planning Degree and is currently engaged with Cardno as a student planner. Hansley is an avid young planner, a serving member of the Planning Institute of Australia Cairns branch and co-founder of the Cairns young planner’s group urbanQ.
Hansley carries a vision for young professionals in the development industry striving for the creation of a Cairns Identity.  In his spare time, Hansley writes a column for the CairnsNow news-blog about urbanism in Cairns.

    Grace

Grace Lambeth is a JCU student in her 3rd year of the Bachelor of Planning. Born and raised in Cairns, Grace has a great affinity for the region that she believes has led her interest in urban design as a place making tool. Grace has a particular interest in the role of public art in place making believing that it is crucial to the creation of quality public spaces that are engaging and reflective of shared histories.
Grace is currently involved in a project with the Cairns Regional Council in creating a handbook that will encourage and guide developers to invest in quality public art that reflects both their project and the community’s values.

    Matthew

Matthew Tickner is a local Civil Designer with 7+ years of professional experience in the civil engineering industry. During the course of Matthew’s career he has developed expertise in civil design including geometric design, road design, water and waste design and Urban Development. He has worked on civil transportation, urban development, water and waste projects throughout Australia and New Zealand.
He spent 2 years in Christchurch, New Zealand, developing extensive Disaster Rebuild experience working within the SCIRT (Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team) organisation as a lead road designer following the 2011/12 Christchurch Earthquakes.

Samuel Batt has a strong passion for technology, enrolling in 2010 at JCU in a Bachelor of Information Technology (Networking).  He enjoys getting his hands dirty building computers from scratch, dabbling in programming and developing and designing websites.
Oddly enough it was actually those elective subjects that lead him to his foundation and passion for digital media design, and in recent years Samuel has moved from design to strategy, altering the course of his academic path in late 2011, after being offered a full time position as Marketing and Design Officer with Skill360 Australia.
He currently studies part time a Bachelor of Business (Marketing) at James Cook University and volunteers on the Board of the Business Liaison Association (a not-for-profit organisation), which helps to develop pivotal links between education and industry.  Last year Samuel was recognised as one of the Cairns Chambers Emerging Leaders of 2015 and completed the exciting 12 month program.

    Stefanie

Stefanie Field graduated in 2014 from the University of Melbourne with a Master of Architecture majoring in Digital Architecture. She works for local firm Total Project Group (TPG) Architects. Stefanie has an interest in implementing digital tools such as scripting in architectural design and fabrication.”
Stef is currently working on The School of Arts building in Cairns, she has worked on the Tanks buildings and fitout, and the Cooktown Foreshore (construction will commence in 2016).
