(Constitution of the Independent State of Papua New Guinea, Preamble)

To commemorate Papua New Guinea’s 50th Anniversary of Independence (1975–2025), students and staff of James Cook University shared objects that connect them to Papua New Guinea. The exhibition sheds light on the relationship between the tangible and intangible – between the material and spiritual aspects of ples (place).

Some of the objects are memorabilia of Independence Day 1975. Others are significant objects that families have brought from PNG to Australia. These objects connect people in the Diaspora to home places and kin in PNG.

    Location:

The exhibition is located in The Cairns Institute (Building D3) at James Cook University. Access is available Monday to Friday during regular business hours.

The library (Building B1) holds an additional display of PNG artefacts from staff and students.
