    Start 19 July 2016, 1:00pm
    End 19 July 2016, 5:30pm
In conjunction with the 28th Annual Conference of the Chinese Economics Society Australia, the College of Business, Law and Governance at the Division of Tropical Environments and Societies and The Cairns Institute of James Cook University, together with the TTNQ, Tourism Research Australia, Cairns Chamber of Commerce and Advance Cairns have organised these timely forums for the business and tourism communities in the Cairns regioForum 1: Attracting More Chinese Tourists to Australia and the Cairns Region: What Do We Need to Do?

Tourism matters to many regions and communities as a current part of the Australian society. It matters very much to Cairns. Often, expert conferences which should include tourism as a key topic fail to do so. We are not making that mistake. The speakers on the Tourism Panel are united by a common position: well managed tourism is a pathway to economic well-being, international harmony and provides a part of the case for conserving Australia’s distinctive natural environments.
As researchers and analysts of trends, the speakers offer ideas about new ideas and developments affecting regional tourism, especially new ideas and issues related to China and its dynamic economy. The Forum will be moderated by Professor Philip Pearce.

Forum 2: In Search of New Sources of Growth: What China Should Do Next?

In the past three decades, China’s economy has expanded very impressively. In the recent years, however, a number of challenges are increasingly exerting significant constraints on China’s economic growth, such as environmental pollution, income inequality, and regional disparity. New sources must be found to sustain China’s future economic expansion.
At the Forum, a panel of distinguished speakers will share their wisdom about what China should and may do to search for new sources for its sustained economic growth and how China’s policy choices may impact on its own economy and the economies elsewhere. Possible impacts of the Australia-China free trade agreement on Australia’s economy as a whole and regionally will also be discussed. The Forum will be facilitated by Professor Iain Gordon.
