2025 JCU Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research Cadetships

    Expressions of Interest are now open for the 2025 James Cook University Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research Cadetships, offering Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander undergraduate and honours students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on research experience while receiving financial and professional support.

    This paid, ten-month research placement provides students with the opportunity to work one day per week with either The Cairns Institute or TropWATER, contributing to research projects that align with their academic and career aspirations. The program fosters both personal and professional growth in a supportive and inclusive environment.

    What our cadetships offer: James Cook University (JCU) Research Cadets are provided the opportunity to earn course credit for their degree while participating in a paid cadetship. Cadets receive:

    • Employment with either The Cairns Institute (TCI) or TropWATER one day per week for the duration of the cadetship.

    • Reimbursement for the costs of books, resources and other study expenses to a maximum of $1000.

    • Access to professional development and networking opportunities.

    • Credit toward completion of their degree subject to meeting entry and assessment criteria for relevant work-integrated learning subjects (e.g. SC3008 or SC5008).

    Eligibility Criteria: Applicants must be of Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent and be enrolled in full-time study in their first undergraduate or honours course at JCU. This program provides an invaluable opportunity for students to develop research skills, enhance their employability, and build connections with experienced researchers.
